From Americans for Responsible Recreational Access (10/19/2001):
Personal Watercraft and Off-highway Vehicles are in serious risk of being banned at Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina. Public hearings will be held to discuss this issue on October 25 and 26, 2001. Two meetings will be held each day from 12:00pm to 2:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm. The meetings will be held at the Duke University Marine Lab on Pivers Island, between Morehead City and Beaufort, North Carolina. Please send written comments to:
Superintendent, Cape Lookout National Seashore
131 Charles
Street
Harkers Island, NC 28531
OR e-mail to karren_brown@nps.gov.
The public will have a 30-day comment period after the public meetings to respond in writing. All correspondence, including emails, will be printed and become part of the official public record. Results of the meetings and the final determination will be posted on the park's website at www.nps.gov/calo and will be published nationally through news media.
In addition to these meetings, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Resources will hold a field hearing on November 2, 2001 at 9:00am. The hearing will be held at the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort and Congressman Walter Jones (R-NC) will be attending.
Residents of North Carolina, please take the time to contact your representative or attend one of these meetings. This is a prime opportunity to voice your deep concerns about public land and waterway closures. Only the anti-access perspective will be heard if you do not speak-up, further perpetuating the abundant negative views towards recreation enthusiasts.
